AFES School Programs and Clubs

500 X 5:

In an effort to help ensure that all children enter school ready to read, this program encourages parents to read at least 500 books to their preschool children by the time they reach the age of five. The program is open every Thursday from 2:00-5:30pm in the AuSable Forks School library. There are many bags of books for parents to choose from and sign out (10 books in each bag). The bags are age specific, i.e. new born, 1 year old, 2 years old, etc. Contact the school at 647-5503 or stop by during the 500X5 hours to enroll in the program.

Student Council:

This club was designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership both within the school building as well as in the community through various projects and programs that the student council provides throughout the school year. It also gives the members an opportunity to speak out about concerns and give suggestions for changes. Membership is open to students in grades 4-6. Any fourth through sixth grade student is allowed to join the club. Student Council meetings are held on every other Tuesday. The meetings are held after school so as not to interfere with the academic time during the school day.

Book Club:

This club was designed to encourage students to read and discuss books which interest and excite them. This club meets on every other Tuesday after school and available to any 4th -6th grade student.

Accelerated Reader Program:

This program is designed to encourage and enhance the student’s reading experience and motivation to read. All students, grades 1 through 6, may participate. Students are encouraged to read AR books and afterwards take a short comprehension test on the classroom computer. This program does not have any direct bearing on the student’s grades, however, we believe that the more they read, the more their academic experience is enhanced and thus, indirectly will improve their grades. But most of all, it is our desire through this program to create a love of reading.

College For Every Student:

Over the course of the last two school years, Au Sable Forks Elementary has been a part of the College For Every Student organization (formerly known as the Foundation for Excellent Schools). This national organization was designed to encourage schools to develop programs which attract students which may not necessarily see college as an option for themselves, but have great potential to succeed. Some of these students are currently successful in school while others have yet to reach their potential. AFES generally chooses 5-7 “scholars” to be a part of this program. Over the course of the last two years these students have been involved in the following:

  • Mentoring
  • Goal Setting Activities
  • Field trips to Plattsburgh State University
  • Community Projects
  • School Projects
  • Assisting in different areas at school
