INTRODUCTION TO MICROCOMPUTER APPLICATIONS CCC – – ½ High School Credit

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Keyboarding (5015).
This course will prepare students to be intelligent users of computers and to understand the basics of word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation preparation and the Internet through “hands-on” experiences. Students will become familiar with the Microsoft Windows operating system and will become proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint and be able to evaluate Internet websites. Students will engage in transferring skills learned to other subject areas as well as real-life work experiences.
5003 – PERSONAL FINANCE MANAGEMENT CCC – – ½ High School Credit

This course is designed to help students acquire the skills to understand the basis of their everyday financial decisions. Attention is given to personal income and personal expenditures, borrowing and the use of personal credit. Introductory personal investment practices, insurance, annuities, home investment, securities and mutual funds will also be covered, as well as taxes and estate planning.
5008 – STREET LAW* – – ½ High School Credit
*Open to juniors and seniors only.
This introduction of law at the secondary level is designed to develop students’ understanding of the role and function of law in our society. It has personal, social, and employability value of importance to the students in their day-to-day activities. Included in this course are units on: Introduction to the Legal System; Criminal, Civil and Juvenile Justice; and Consumer Law. Through the study of law, students should begin to understand and demonstrate the concepts of justice, tolerance, authority and responsibility. Students should also develop skills such as critical thinking, observation and analysis. This class exposes students to the many ways law will affect their adult lives.
5020 – ADVANCED ACCOUNTING* – – 1 High School Credit
*Open to juniors and seniors only.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Accounting (5012).
In this course students will explore advanced accounting procedures dealing with payroll systems and special procedures such as cash funds, depreciation of property and equipment, and inventories. Students will complete a comprehensive accounting simulation using realistic materials.
5012 – ACCOUNTING* – – 1 High School Credit
*Open to sophomores, juniors and seniors only.
This course is an introduction to business record maintenance. Accounting terms and concepts will be taught as students complete an accounting cycle for a service business. Procedures for banking, petty cash and payroll will also be covered. In the second semester of class students will complete an accounting cycle for a merchandising business using subsystems for cash receipts, cash payments, purchases and sales.
5014 – KEYBOARDING COMMUNICATIONS – – ½ High School Credit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Keyboarding (5015).
This course continues where Keyboarding (5015) ends. Students continue to work on the techniques and documents listed under Keyboarding (5015) with more emphasis placed on proofreading and completing mailable documents. Correct spelling, vocabulary, grammatical skills, and sentence structure are key to producing mailable documents. Students will also experience workplace simulations by producing the kinds of documents and work required in real business settings. Activities using more advanced features of Microsoft Word are also included in this course, such as newspaper columns, mail merge and more advanced formatting features.
5015 – KEYBOARDING – – ½ High School Credit
This course is an introduction to basic keyboarding. Students begin by learning each key, letter, number and symbol. Proper technique and finger use is emphasized. While students acquire these basic keyboarding skills, they are also introduced to the basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, learning navigation skills, commands and shortcuts. Proper set-up of simple word processing documents is also covered. Students learn how to key letters, do reports in Modern Language Association (MLA) style, memorandums, tables and other documents. Emphasis is placed on proper technique, speed, accuracy and the most efficient way to operate software when completing documents.
5311 – ADOBE PHOTOSHOP – – ½ High School Credit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Keyboarding (5015).
This course is an introduction to the Photoshop program using the Photoshop toolbars, editing photos (both from digital and film cameras), inserting text, cropping, framing, using clone tools, color, texture, adjusting brightness and color levels. Students have opportunity to create projects using their own pictures and pictures taken at school.
5019 – COMPUTER APPLICATIONS – – ½ High School Credit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Keyboarding (5015).
Computers are a basic part of daily life. This course teaches students how to use computers and the software that runs them. Students will develop a basic understanding of word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation preparation, and the Internet through “hands-on” experiences. They will become familiar with Microsoft Windows operating system and will use Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. Students will be able to transfer skills learned to other subject areas and to real-life personal and work situations.
5017 – CAREER AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT* – – ½ High School Credit
In this course students will explore occupational interests, learn to handle money, examine economic conditions and develop transferable skills that can be used at home or work. A variety of topics are covered, including resumes, cover letters, job applications, other employment documents, paychecks, credit cards, savings, investing, income tax returns, insurance and budgets. This course would benefit all students interested in exploring the field of business as well as those interested in learning more about handling finances.
*This course is required for all students pursuing a 5-unit sequence in business or technical education.
