ENGLISH COMPOSITION CCC – – ½ High School Credit – – 3 CCC Credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of CCC English Placement Examination.
This is a writing course designed to help students acquire the skills they will need for academic success. Students will learn to produce essays that are clear, concise and unified. The writing process is emphasized, and students write a minimum of six papers—some out of class (at least one requiring outside sources and documentation) and at least two in class. At the end of this course, students must take a departmentally-evaluated timed writing test to assess their preparedness to move onto other college writing.
ENGLISH LITERATURE/COMPOSITION CCC – – ½ High School Credit – – 3 CCC Credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of English Composition CCC.
This is a writing course designed to introduce students to literature and writing about literature. Students are expected to have mastered basic writing skills. Students write a minimum of six literary analysis papers—some out of class and at least two in class. Students will read and respond to works of fiction, poetry and drama.

This is a comprehensive course of study of the English language. This course will enable students to have an appreciation for and knowledge of the English language through the study of literature (short stories, novels, poetry, drama and film). In addition, students will be able to improve their usage of the English language through writing skills and public speaking. A research project is also part of this course.
1017 – ENGLISH 11 HONORS – – 1 High School Credit
Prerequisite: Must meet Honors criteria.
Honors students investigate American literature by reading selections from pre-Columbus days to present. Various novels, plays, short stories and poems demonstrate the changing styles of literature as our nation developed. Vocabulary knowledge and essay writing skills in preparation for college entrance exams are also stressed. As part of the college investigation unit, students research college websites, prepare resumes and write college essays.
1022 – ENGLISH 11 – – 1 High School Credit

This course emphasizes literary analysis, writing skills and vocabulary development. Students read and analyze novels, poems, short stories and plays and respond critically in writing. Vocabulary improvement is also stressed. As part of the college investigation unit, students research college websites, prepare resumes and write college essays.
1018 – ENGLISH 10 Honors – – 1 High School Credit
Prerequisite: Must meet Honors criteria.
While following the basic principles of English 10, this course allows for more challenging discovery and study of English Language Arts. Students will engage in a more in-depth study of English.
1024 – ENGLISH 10 – – 1 High School Credit

Units extensively covered in this course include short stories, novels, poetry, plays and research. Writing skills are reinforced by compositions illustrating various forms and styles. Grammar usage is reviewed as an on-going procedure. Students in this course are taught the Modern Language Association (MLA) style of writing a research paper. Students are expected to demonstrate their knowledge through group and individual speaking assignments.
1019 – ENGLISH 9 HONORS – – 1 High School Credit
Prerequisite: Must meet Honors criteria.
While following the basic principles of English 9, this course allows for more in-depth study of English Language Arts at a faster pace. Additional topics are covered, and students are given more independent tasks.

This course is designed to help students excel in the four core English Language Arts learning standards: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will be exposed to a variety of literature such as novels, short stories and poetry. They will learn to write a coherent, accurate, descriptive sentence using proper grammar and punctuation. This will lead to a variety of writing pieces such as descriptive pieces, literary analyses and poetry. Students will focus on listening and speaking through acting out Shakespearean plays. The study of the literary techniques and elements that these works are comprised of will be a common theme throughout the year.
1013 – CREATIVE WRITING – – ½ High School Credit
Various genres of writing are experienced as students write from various prompts. They write independent selections as well as group pieces and share their creative efforts with each other. Learning how to vary opening sentences, write with voice and analyze styles of writing are also investigated.
1012 – THE NOVEL – – ½ High School Credit
This class is a literary experience designed for students who enjoy reading, discussing and writing about literature. Various novels are read during the semester and literary analysis papers are written in response to the reading. Short stories and movies may also supplement the novels when appropriate. Journal writing and class discussion are daily expectations.
1010 – SPEECH/PUBLIC SPEAKING – – ½ High School Credit
This class will focus on the preparation and presentation of both formal and informal speaking situations so that the student can meet the practical needs of communication in the modern day world. The purpose of the class is to present a general overview of speech and its related activities, to provide opportunities for practicing needed speech skills, and to encourage and stimulate further interest in public speaking. Units include the persuasive speech, the demonstration speech, preparation of TV news, the informative speech, a presentation to a large audience and impromptu speaking.
1015 – LITERARY FILMS – – ½ High School Credit
This course uses the medium of film to investigate a variety of literary genres. – Movies are viewed and discussed with respect to character development, setting, – themes, and plot techniques. Additionally, cinematic effects and terms are – learned and students become familiar with techniques used by directors for – creating films.
1053 CREDIT RECOVERY ENGLISH – – 1 High School Credit
This course is an option for students who have failed a basic high school English course. Students will be given the opportunity to master skills that they were unable to master during regular classroom time.
